The people I've met and the experience of teaching will stay with me for a lifetimeI couldn't have lived with a nicer set of people. I will definitely miss them even the high pitched good mornings and werid youtube mixes
This was my first workaway experience and I'm not sure I can do it justice.
Hanoi is nice, especially the craziness and lights of Old Quarter, but it's the people I've met who really make it.
I couldn't have lived with a nicer set of people. I will definitely miss them even the high pitched good mornings and werid youtube mixes. People in Hanoi are the friendliest I've come across and only too willing to talk or take you places. Students are more friends.
As for Ms Hay, she couldn't do enough for you. You will never go hungry (her food is excellent), honey is her cure for every ailment and if something needs fixing she'll take no prisoners in trying to sort it.
Other people have talked about classes and you will be thrown in the deep end. There are 3 places where you might teach; an after school learning centre, the apartment or in the outskirts at Thanh Tri. You will be given books to work from and in the learning centre there are Vietnamese teachers (invaluable with the Supertots!). After the first couple of lessons and with some games up your sleeve you'll be fine. The adult classes are more challenging in deciding what to teach but you can also have more interesting discussions. Teaching is usually in the evening with 3/4 lessons at the weekend but you'll have one or two completely free days as well. Ms Hay tries to organise subsidized trips out with students at least twice a week which I always looked forward to and it means you get to know the students better.
The apartment is in a family area and has two rooms (guys and girls) and a space in the middle with a computer, sofa, kitchen etc. You can easily catch the bus into Old Quarter/West Lake. Overall if you want to try teaching and want to live in Hanoi I couldn't recommend this place more. The people I've met and the experience of teaching will stay with me for a lifetime. Good luck.
