I volunteered with VCV for 6 weeks over July/August 2015 and can honestly say that the time spent there was one of the highlights of my 5 months in South East Asia.
At any given time, we had a mix of 6 or 7 international volunteers sharing a cosy apartment: 2 bathrooms, free laundry facilities and tasty meals prepared daily by Ms Hay and her assistant Hang.
Weekday lesson commitments, are in the evenings leaving you free to explore Hanoi during your day. Weekends have a bit busier teaching schedule, but you'll generally have 2 days and nights off during the week - giving you enough time to head out for an overnight visit to another town or province.
We taught English as a second language to kids at a formal school - ranging from 5 to 15 years old - working off a structured curriculum and preparing lesson plans
The other lesson types were hosting a conversational English discussion with a group young adults in our apartment.
These same young adults took us out on their mopeds once or twice a week - visiting places and restaurants that only the local people know.
In my 6 weeks, I got a chance to see Hanoi and Vietnamese life from the viewpoint of someone who lives there, and not just a tourist cruising in and out for a superficial visit.
I met some good people, made some good mates, and left with a lot of fond memories.
Thanks to Ms Hay.
Thanks to the students.
Thanks to my fellow volunteers.
